I wrote these lyrics when I was living in New York, and witnessed first hand the hard life of refugees and the homeless, in particular a shopping bag lady who lived in the streets. I then remembered that Christ was homeless with nowhere to lay his head, and that everyone on the earth, in a spiritual sense, is a refugee without Christ as our refuge.
Here's to the shopping bag ladies of the world!
The pavement is the only pillow you know.
What's that piece of paper sitting on your head?
Is it your house, or is it your bed?
Polly, you're the princess of the night;
How long will you continue your flight?
Only one Man is acquainted with your sorrow;
But she said,
"Don't worry, I won't be here tomorrow."
Here's to the shopping bag ladies of the world!
The pavement is the only pillow you know.
CHORUS:
YOU'VE GOT NO DOWRY BUT YOUR RUSTY RICHES
YOU'VE GOT NO CLOTHING BUT YOUR TATTERED STITCHES
YOU'VE GOT NO HOUSE, NOT EVEN A HOME
HOW LONG WILL YOU CONTINUE TO ROAM
CONTINUE TO ROAM
CONTINUE TO ROAM
