This song is about the trials of being on the road as a guitarist and concert minister. “Mr. Jones” is Dean Jones, the well-known actor I met through Bob Munger. “Mrs. Stone” is Betty Stone. I lived as a boarder in her home. She was a fervent saint and one of three ladies I knew with highly tempered spiritual steel for a backbone who were not afraid to warn me.
HE'S JUST A GUITAR GYPSY ON THE ROAD
WITH ONE MORE GUITAR CASE TO UNLOAD
ANOTHER SOLDIER WHO HAS GONE TO WAR
BEGINS TO WONDER WHAT HE'S FIGHTIN' FOR
Forty-two states are like empty rounds
Programs, like tumble weeds, are blowin' on the ground
But he has got to do it, his portion is to play
His records are out of print and he's got nothin' left to say
I thought those greenhouse years were gone
Living on granola and tomatoes by the pound
He sleeps on old newspapers where he never quite belongs
With faith as his armour to keep him right from wrong
HE'S JUST A GUITAR GYPSY ON THE ROAD
WITH ONE MORE GUITAR CASE TO UNLOAD
ANOTHER SOLDIER WHO HAS GONE TO WAR
BEGINS TO WONDER WHAT HE'S FIGHTIN' FOR
