I'M PERSUADED TO BELIEVE NOTHIN' CAN SEPARATE ME
FROM THE WONDERFUL LOVE OF GOD
BY HIS POWER HE WILL KEEP ME AS I LET HIM LIVE WITHIN ME
WHILE IN THIS SINFUL WORLD I TROD
NEITHER HEIGHT NOR DEPTH NOR PRINCIPALITIES
THINGS PRESENT OR THINGS TO COME
EVEN THO' THE DEVIL HATE ME HE CAN NEVER SEPARATE ME
FROM THE WONDERFUL LOVE OF GOD

This excerpt begins in the middle of the song where my guitar instrumental occurs. Many of you might have wondered how I got that sound. Here is my secret. I wanted to created a tack piano sound on the guitar. So I borrowed Noel Paul Stookey's Fender Stratocaster guitar and put a sponge below the pickups to mute the strings so they wouldn't ring...then cranked the volume. (How ironic is it that a famous folk singer, famous for acoustic guitar, has an electric guitar.) I first recorded this on a battery powered cassette player in a friend's back yard in North Hollywood, and sent it as a demo to Pat Boone. There were dogs barking in the back yard as well as the sound of a train going by, that added even more character to the recording. This made him laugh and ultimately is what inspired him to sign me up to his record label.
